This relates to the hypodermic needle theory, which states that audiences act on impulses after consuming violent content, as if they were being injected by a needle with a drug. This is an ethical issue because harmful content should be better regulated by regulatory bodies like the BBFC to avoid further incidences. Intro - explain the media effects debate The media effects debate is a debate that suggests that the media has harmful effects on audiences. 1st para Point - Exposure to harmful content in the media desensitises audiences by making them behave on violent impulses. Structure for Long Answer Questions (16-20 marks)​ P.E.E.T​ Point = An idea, category or piece of terminology​ Example = A specific thing (text, company, aspect of case study, statistic etc.) from real world media​ Explain = Justify your point. Relate to question and command verb. Possibly given an opinion. State why the example is appropriate. ​ Theory = Be specific, link it to the theory. Don’t just drop the theory in, really be specific On average, for every three marks you want a P.E.E.T.​ 16-18 marks = 4 X P.E.E.T ​ 20 marks = 4-5 X P.E.E.T​ CONCLUSION IS NEEDED Remember – in a debate question, candidates are expected to demonstrate both sides in order to gain maximum marks. This doesn’t need to be balanced.

This means that, after watching a violent horror film, or playing a violent POV shooter, audience members will be negatively influenced. This presupposes that audiences are passive (unable to reject media messages) rather than active (they make sense of media messages through personal and social contexts).
