Contemporary media products can have a negative influence on audiences, this can lead to behaviours like aggression and violence, which is an ethical issue.


The main relevant ethical issue is exposure to harmful content, which can have significant negative effects and impacts on the target audience. A contemporary media product such as The Scream movie, influenced a young man to kill a teenage girl. This relates to the hypodermic needle theory, which states that audiences act on impulses after consuming violent content, as if they were being injected by a needle with a drug. This is an ethical issue because harmful content should be better regulated by regulatory bodies like the BBFC to avoid further incidences.

Another contemporary product with this issue is The dark knight rises, where a man shot multiple when it was screened in a cinema. This relates to the Moral Panic theory which says that audiences will start to worry about their safety and others, after an incident like this. This is an ethical issue because individuals could act on their negative thoughts after being exposed to a media product.

A counter argument is The uses and grats theory, meaning audiences can be active and not let media be the sole reason that people act aggressive and violent.

Audio is used in many different ways to create meaning through genres. I have studied the opening scene of the 2017 Jordan Peele horror movie Get Out.

During the opening scene, we hear some contrapuntal music which starts diegetic and turns non diegetic.
